Take care of home court. That’s what the Raptors have done this afternoon. The Dallas Mavericks, currently the second best team in the Western Conference, one of the best road team in the league lose in a blow out to the Raptors at the ACC.
How did the Raptors do it? They played excellent defense. This is not one of those, ‘the other team misses wide open looks’ defense. The Raptors contested many of the shots the Mavs took and making life harder for Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Terry and co.
The offense was rolling in the second quarter with Calderon running the team. We criticize Jose for his defense, but we always ignore that he is an excellent quarterback for any offense. He finds the open man, doesn’t turn over the ball, hit open looks. George Karl once said that Jose Calderon is coach’s dream of a PG. He is showing why in the last two games.
Jarrett Jack also played quite well. He made a majority of his shots including a circus shot in the third quarter and have 7 assists on 0 turnovers in 23 minutes. With the two PG playing at a high level, the Raptors’ potent offense just got a whole lot better.
Keys to the Win:
- No third quarter let down. The Raps were up 13 after the first half, and they never looked back. Sure the Mavs started well early in the 3rd quarter, but the Raptors responded and ends up winning the 3rd quarter.
- Defense. The Mavs made their shots, but alot of those are contested. The Mavericks shoot 5-15 from 3point line today, that’s a welcome change after seeing Boston, Indiana and New York lit up the Raptors from downtown in the last 3 games.
- 5 turnovers. Yes, the Raptors only turned the ball over 5 times, and have 28 assists while shooting 43% from 3 and 49% overall. That’s as good as it’s going to get on offense.
21-20 (Halfway mark)
