Delfino+Ukic for Amir Johnson/Sonny Weems trade

“Just when I thought I was out… they pull me back in.”

Well, I wrote yesterday that the Raptors probably won’t make any moves anytime soon, and then all of a sudden a trade. Carlos Delfino+Roko Ukic to Milwaukee for Amir Johnson and Sonny Weems.

Carlos Delfino was supposed to be back in Toronto, but due to contract situation and subsequent moves made by the Raptors, he wouldn’t get the playing time nor the contract length he’s seeking. If I am not mistaken, Delfino will get a 3 year deal from Milwaukee closer for 10 mil. I like Delfino, he is a very streaky shooter who wouldn’t stop shooting even if he has a bad shooting night. He shoot a poor FG percentage, but his TS% is pretty decent because he does hit a decent percentage from the 3 point line. He can handle the ball, a good rebounder as a SG and an above average defender. I think Skiles will take a liking to him, since he is tough and play defense. He should be the starting SF for the Bucks.

I am not a fan of Ukic, a lot of people compare him to Jose Calderon, just because they are both from Europe and both struggled in their rookie season. Calderon, in his first year has shown he can play, while I am not sure about Ukic. I find an interesting stat about Ukic from
http://www.basketball-statistics.com/. It states that 43% of Ukic’s scoring comes from layups. This tells you everything you need to know about Roko. He is 6-5, can get to the paint, but absolutely useless everywhere else. He can’t make a jump shot. Defense just sag off him and dare him to shoot. Also he isn’t a pass-first PG, he looks to score first with his drive instead of finding open man. He is probably the 3rd PG on the Bucks team behind Ridnour and Jennings.

In a way, Amir Johnson fills a need for the Toronto Raptors, the Raptors need a guy who can block shot and rebound. Unfortunately, he is also a walking foul machine, with a low basketball IQ. He has upside and he’s very young, but I am not sure how much PT he will get; right now he is the 5th big men behind Bosh/Bargnani/Evans/Rasho. Another interesting thing is what will happen to Patrick O’Brien? POB is supposed to be the 5th big men on the team, now there is little to no chance he will get PT to play. I suspect he is going to be waived if the Raptors can find someone who can fill their needs (backup SF).  Also this means that Pops Mensu Bonsu will not be back as a Raptor.
Sonny Weems is a throw-in, and I wouldn’t be surprised he gets waived as well.

So why did the Raptors do the deal?

My thinking is that Colangelo likes Amir Johnson, and since it’s last year of his contract, he can just let him go if Johnson doesn’t pan out. And instead of losing Delfino for nothing, he gets something tangible in return. Basically, it’s a small risk/medium reward type deal.

Why did the Bucks made the deal?

Bucks’ GM John Hammonds is very familiar with Delfino, since Hammonds worked as an assistant GM in Detroit and drafted Delfino. He fills a need as they don’t have anyone who can score in the SF spot. This also means that Sessions probably won’t be back as a Buck, with Delfino signing a 3 year deal. The Bucks may not be able to score a lot of points but they will be a tough defensive team. A team that no one wants to play.

Is this it for the Raptors?

Well, the Raptors now have 15 men on their roster, so it’s very possible that this is it, but one could see them waiving Weems and POB if they find someone they like more. If there is a lesson this summer, it’s that the off-season isn’t over until Bryan Colangelo says so.
